Our Most Limited Bird — And a Little Bit of a Joke on My Old Life
Full disclosure: I knew our Freedom Rangers had to be something special the moment I learned their name. Once a Ranger, always a Ranger, right? I couldn't not raise them.
Our regular pastured chicken is a Cornish Cross, and they are a great bird. It grows fast, it's efficient, and it's why we can sell chicken at a price a family can actually afford every week. We're proud of it.
Freedom Rangers are a different animal entirely, a slower-growing heritage-type breed that takes closer to 10 weeks to finish instead of 8. That extra time means more days out on pasture, more bugs chased, more ground covered, and a bird that's put in real work by the time it gets to your table. It costs us more to raise and we only get through a limited number each season.
The result is a firmer, more flavorful bird that tastes like it earned its name. We only raise a small batch of these a year, so once they're gone, they're gone until next season.
Rangers lead the way. Ours just happen to lead it across a pasture.
